Lake Whitney Profile

Impounded in 1952, this 23,500 acre lake is a showcase for trophy fishing for several species with it's sheer bluffs, rocky banks and the massive areas of standing timber, it makes for a perfect habitat for game fish. Lake Whitney lies on the Brazos River which also has a reputation for some great striper and smallmouth fishing.

Rated as A Top Destination for Texas Trophy Stripers. Lake Whitney is also Rated as A Top US Destination for Smallmouth Bass where the state record was caught.

Location 42 miles N-NW of Waco Texas on IH35. Take State Hwy 22 exit at Hillsboro and travel West to Whitney. 54 miles South of Dallas
Fishing Regulations 18-inch minimum on all smallmouth with a daily bag limit of 3. All other species same as statewide.
Comments Usually a lake is known for having trophy fishing for one species sometimes two species. Well here we have a triple bonus. Lake Whitney is the top destination in Texas for trophy smallmouth fishing (rated as a top smallmouth fishery in the US by Infisherman Magazine). Besides the smallie fishing, which we will get to later, there is some great striper fishing being well known for its large population of 20 pound plus fish. Also the largemouth fishing is fantastic with a regular taking of 7-8 pounders. The night fishing is a big bonus for smallies with the moon phases dictating where and what the fish are doing.
Facilities Whatever you are looking for as far as a top notch guided fishing trip, great place to launch, rent a slip, book a cottage, or hook up your RV, and a great place to fish out of, we have the place you need to call, Chris and Lesli Shafer who own Little Rocky Lodge and guide service (254-622-3010). Also we are very happy to have Chris as our prostaff member from Lake Whitney with all his experience and knowledge about the great fishing at Whitney and also the Brazos River below the dam. By the way their Lodge is the most beautiful and peaceful spot on the lake.
Fishing Tip Probably the best tip I can give you on Lake Whitney is for you to give Chris Shafer a call and book a trip. We have not fished this lake but are making plans to go and Chris is the first call on the list. Chris caught the new Brazos River smallmouth (7.00 lbs.) on 5/07/97. We have put together some info to give you some hot spots and baits to use. Hands down live shad is the top choice especially for the stripers. Now remember striper fishing with a topwater lure in the shallows in the spring is a blast, and with a population of many fish over 20, hang on. Some hot spots are: For smallies Chris recommends targeting Little Rocky, Rocky, Lofers Bend, and King. Spots for stripers in the fall try the open flats of McCowan valley and during the winter go deep to 40 feet and look for the suspended stripers and use a bucktail jig or a soft plastics on a jig and a slab. Also for the largemouth as well as smallies try the area known as Lofers Bend near the dam. The smallmouth usually spawn before the largemouth so look for them to be making the move to the shallows in February. When the smallmouth and stripers come out of the spawning ritual into post-spawn they are very aggressive and some great topwater and live shad action is to be had by all. In the month of April you must put this lake on your trip list for some great action. Night fishing with spinners, cranks, grubs, and live shad is great with the smallmouth moving deep to shallow with the darker the moon phase. In summer like most all lakes the stripers move deep and adhere to deep structure and cover and relate to the thermocline. In the fall look for the big fish to move in shallow. A productive topwater lure in the spring is a 7 inch redfin also one of my favorites for big stripers. Some great lure choices in fall for bass are spinner baits, and crankbaits early them switch to carolina-rigged soft plastics towards the middle of the day. Chris reports that several huge smallies are taken in the spring while topwater fishing for stripers. Give Chris a call at (254-622-3010, the area code 817 changed to 254 on 05/25/97, and book a trip for some trophy fishing at this fantastic lake. One more very important note for all of you, the birds will lead you to the feeding fish. Schools of game fish will herd up the shad and chase them to the surface where they have no where to go. When the game fish slash through these schools of shad feeding, the birds pick up the wounded and dead bait fish.
